History:
The Somua S35 medium cavalry tank began prototyping in 1934 when the French Military updated its specifications for armored cavalry vehicles. The tank needed to rival the early German Panzer III variants and the Soviet BT series and thus needed armor to withstand standard early-war anti-tank guns and a capable armament to combat armored threats.
The Somua S35 was well protected by a maximum of 45mm to 47mm cast armor on its front hull and 40mm of armor on its turret face. Its armament consisted of a 47 mm SA 35 main gun and a 7.5mm Mitrailleuse 1931 Coaxial MG. A powerful Somua V8 engine producing 190hp could propel the tank up to 40 km/h. A crew of three was required for operation: a Driver, a Radio Operator, and a Commander.
The Somua S35 was by 1940 standards, one of the best medium tanks fielded by any army. It was fast, well-armored, and well-armed. Despite the expensive cost, low fielding numbers, and mechanical unreliability, the S35 had some admirable qualities that made it a formidable opponent during the German Invasion of France.
