History:

The FK (Feldkanone) 96 n.A. was an incremental modernization of the earlier FK 96. Krupp retained the 7.7 cm barrel but fitted a new horizontal sliding-wedge breech, a hydro-spring recoil mechanism, and updated the carriage to create a quick-firing field gun suitable for the mobile warfare doctrines of the early 20th century. It served as one of Germany’s primary light field guns throughout World War I.

While lighter and more mobile than some contemporary designs, the FK 96 n.A. was eventually outclassed in sustained trench warfare by higher-rate-of-fire and longer-range guns such as the French 75 and later the German 7.7 cm FK 16. During and after the war, the FK 96 n.A. was adapted into several variants (including infantry and howitzer-carriage mountings) and remained in service with several successor states into the interwar period. Ammunition types ranged from high-explosive and shrapnel to smoke, star, and gas shells, and the gun was even adapted for limited naval and anti-aircraft roles.

The FK 96 n.A. served as Germany’s principal field gun throughout much of the First World War, providing reliable firepower across every major front.
