History:
Developed in the mid-1930s by Curtiss-Wright, the P-36 Hawk marked a significant shift away from biplane fighters with its all-metal construction, retractable landing gear, enclosed cockpit, and powerful Pratt & Whitney R-1830 radial engine. The Hawk’s manoeuvrability, ruggedness, and excellent cockpit visibility made it attractive to nations seeking modern designs. France, facing urgent rearmament needs, became the first major foreign operator, placing orders for the H-75A-1 in 1938. The first aircraft arrived that December, and by spring 1939, they were already serving in frontline French squadrons. It was officially designated as the Curtiss H75-C1.
