History:

The British Mark IV represented the refinement of Britain’s early tank experiments. Drawing on lessons from the Mark I–III and their trials on the Somme, it introduced sturdier armor, safer fuel placement, and a more practical layout while retaining the rhomboid shape needed for trench warfare.
Powered by a 105 hp engine and crewed by eight men, the Mark IV appeared in Male and Female variants, armed with either 6-pounder guns or multiple machine guns. It debuted in 1917 at Messines Ridge and proved its value at Cambrai, later fighting throughout 1918, including the first tank-versus-tank duel against the German A7V.
With over 1,200 built, the Mark IV became the most significant British tank of the war.

Vehicle Marking Inspiration:

  • Barrhead (Mark V Male): (No. 56”) from C Company, 2nd Battalion, used in 1918 and known for its service at the Battle of Amiens.
  • Lodestar III (Mark IV Male): A preserved Mark IV Male tank, kept in original colors and displayed at the Royal Military Museum in Brussels.
  • Deborah II (Mark IV Female): A full-size reproduction of the Mark IV Female “Deborah,” built to commemorate the original tank lost at Cambrai in 1917.
  • No. 245 (Mark IV Female): presented to the town of Ashford after WWI and now maintained as a static display.
