History:
Originally designed in Czechoslovakia by ČKD as the LT vz. 38 to replace the LT vz. 35, the tank officially entered production in early 1939. The German occupation of Czechoslovakia brought the design into Wehrmacht service, where it was redesignated Panzer 38(t), with “(t)” indicating tschechisch (“Czech”).
In June 1941, the Panzer 38(t) took part in Operation Barbarossa, proving capable against lighter Soviet types initially encountered, such as the T-26, BT-7, and T-28. However, the arrival of the T-34 and KV-1 quickly rendered its main gun and armor inadequate. By late 1942, it had been withdrawn from German frontline Panzer units, though it continued to serve with Axis allies, including Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania.
