History:
Markings: #501 - Schwere Pänzerjager Abtailung 653
The Panzerbefehlswagen VI Tiger (P) was a German heavy tank prototype developed during the Second World War by Ferdinand Porsche’s design bureau. It originated from the VK 45.01 (P) program, one of two competing heavy tank designs evaluated by the German Army, with Henschel’s VK 45.01 (H) ultimately selected for mass production as the Tiger I. The Tiger (P) never progressed beyond limited prototype production. Of approximately one hundred Porsche chassis manufactured, around ninety were converted into Ferdinand heavy tank destroyers, while ten were completed as turreted tanks and retained for training use.
One complete Tiger (P) chassis was eventually rebuilt as a command vehicle and designated Panzerbefehlswagen VI (P). Assigned tactical number 003, it was deployed in April 1944 with Schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 653 on the Eastern Front, where it served alongside Elefant tank destroyers. In this role, it functioned primarily as a battalion command vehicle rather than as a frontline heavy tank. Surviving documentation of its operational service is limited, and no confirmed combat engagements are recorded. By mid-1944, Tiger (P) 003 was lost; however, the precise circumstances of its destruction or abandonment remain unknown.
