History:

The Ordnance QF 18-pounder was born from the British Army’s need for a modern, mobile, and quick-firing field gun following the lessons of the Boer War. Older pieces had been outclassed by faster, more accurate enemy artillery, prompting a complete rethink of field-gun design. British engineers set out to create a weapon that could keep up with cavalry and infantry alike, while delivering rapid, sustained fire.

Firing a high-velocity 18-pound shell from an 84 mm barrel, the gun offered excellent accuracy and a steady rate of fire thanks to its one-piece ammunition and recoil-absorbing mechanism. On the battlefield, it proved adaptable and dependable, equally capable of laying down a creeping barrage or engaging enemy positions at over 5 km range.

During the First World War, the 18-pounder formed the backbone of British and Commonwealth artillery, seeing action on every major front. Crews praised its reliability and ease of operation, though its limited elevation and range on the early single-trail carriage meant that it would eventually be overshadowed by newer designs like the 25-pounder.
