History:
The A7V was Germany’s first operational tank, designed and deployed during the final year of the First World War.
The A7V first saw combat on 21 March 1918 during Germany’s Spring Offensive, though mechanical issues plagued many vehicles before reaching the front. Its most notable action occurred a month later at the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux, where A7Vs engaged British Mark IV tanks in the world’s first tank-versus-tank battle. While individual vehicles performed well under ideal conditions, the design’s high center of gravity, poor trench-crossing ability, and limited production meant its overall battlefield impact was minimal.
Only 20 combat A7Vs were built, alongside additional unarmoured “Überlandwagen” cargo versions.
