History
The Tiger I Ausf. H1 was one of Germany’s most feared heavy tanks of the Second World War, combining thick armor with the powerful 8.8 cm KwK 36 cannon. Introduced in 1942, the Tiger quickly gained a reputation for its ability to destroy enemy tanks at long range while resisting most Allied anti-tank weapons of the period.
Tiger 131, the most famous surviving Tiger I, was captured by British forces in Tunisia during the North African campaign in 1943 after being disabled in combat. Unlike most surviving examples, Tiger 131 remains fully operational today and is preserved at The Tank Museum, where it serves as one of the only running Tiger I tanks in the world. Its capture provided Allied forces with valuable insight into German armor design and technology.
